Professional chimney cleaning and sweep in Columbus OH and Galloway OHHow Does Chimney Sweeping Work?

Chimney sweeping is an old art, dating back several hundred years. Today, CSIA-certified chimney sweeps use a variety of specialized tools, such as brushes, scrubbers, and commercial vacuums, to remove creosote and debris safely and effectively from chimney flues.

The work usually progresses from the bottom to the top of the chimney, but it can also go in the other direction. When The Chimney Guys crew cleans your chimney, we take special care to protect the work area and all your furnishings from soot, ash, and damage.

Experts Recommend Annual Chimney Cleanings

The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), along with most other hearth and fire-safety organizations, recommends that all chimneys be properly inspected once a year and cleaning when necessary:

  1. To remove flammable creosote
  2. To remove drafting obstructions

Why Chimney Cleanings Are Important

Creosote Removal

Creosote forms when smoke condenses in your chimney flue. It can be puffy, flaky, sticky, or solid, but in all forms it’s highly flammable. In fact, creosote is the #1 cause of most chimney fires reported throughout Ohio and the U.S. each year.

Chimney sweeping effectively removes creosote and built-up soot, greatly reducing the chance you’ll experience a chimney fire.

Removal of Obstructive Debris

The second main reason to have your Columbus-area chimney cleaned is to remove leaves, twigs, small-animal nests, and other debris. The more debris in the flue, the narrower it will become. Eventually, the restricted flue can cause smoke to back up into your home.

Proper chimney sweeping removes obstruction-causing debris. A good chimney cap will keep debris and animals from entering in the first place.

Prevention of Carbon Monoxide Backups

Carbon monoxide, which is present in smoke, is invisible and odorless. It’s also known to be potentially fatal to people and animals. Smoke backups from an obstructed flue also mean carbon monoxide backups.

Chimney Fire Characteristics

Some chimney fires are huge and can’t be missed; others are small and brief and easy to miss. But all chimney fires can do damage to your chimney liner, chimney masonry and nearby materials of your home.

Watch for these chimney fire signs:

  • Strange clicking or tapping sounds while the fireplace is in use
  • Dark smoke coming from either end of the chimney
  • A rumbling sound, like from a train
  • A “hot” smell in the air

If you notice any of these signs, call 911 immediately.

Chimney Inspections

Chimney sweeping should include a basic chimney inspection that looks at all readily accessible areas of your chimney. Our licensed chimney inspectors can spot the earliest signs of damage and malfunction, allowing you to schedule repairs promptly before serious trouble occurs.

Chimney flue inspections include video imaging technology that lets us see what otherwise can’t be seen.
