You probably already schedule professional cleaning for your chimney flue. But did you know that your furnace venting system also needs regular cleaning and maintenance to keep it running safely and efficiently?
The Chimney Guys provides expert furnace flue cleaning throughout the Columbus, Ohio, region. Here’s how we can help you.
Furnace Flue Venting
Furnaces (and some hot water heaters) can be set up to vent through your existing masonry chimney, or they can vent through their own systems. In both cases, a smooth, clear vent path will help the appliance run more efficiently, saving you money on utility costs.
A properly maintained furnace flue will also be less likely to clog with particulate matter and send combustion gases into your living spaces.
The biggest concern with these gas backups is carbon monoxide, an invisible and odorless gas that’s known to be potentially fatal to people and animals when inhaled.
How We Clean Furnace Flues
The process of cleaning the flue connected to a furnace or hot water heater is similar to the chimney sweeping process. We use specialized tools to safely remove build ups within the flue while inspecting for cracks, breaks, corrosion and other types of damage.
Signs of Furnace Venting Problems
These signs indicate that your furnace may not be venting correctly:
Backdrafts
Backdrafts pull air out of the furnace flue and send it into the home. An obstructed furnace flue is a primary cause of this, but negative air pressure in the house can also lead to backdrafts. Another possible culprit is an incorrectly sized flue.
Moisture on windows
Condensation on the insides of your windows can be caused by inefficient furnace drafting, which pushes fumes into the air.
Condensation blocking the vent
High-efficiency furnaces have to be able to drain the condensation they create. If this doesn’t happen, the vent can become blocked. The horizontal slope needs to be at a quarter-inch pitch to prevent a blockage.
Clay tile liner damage
If your furnace or hot water heater vents through your chimney and your chimney is outfitted with a clay tile liner, there may be evidence of the tiles cracking and splitting from corrosive combustion gases and moisture. The solution is to replace the clay liner with a durable stainless-steel liner.
