Why Is Your Chimney Leaking?

Chimney service companies in Ohio spend a lot of their time dealing with leaky chimneys. The Chimney Guys of Pataskala, OH, would like to share a little about the different types of chimney leaks we encounter in the field and how we resolve them.

Chimney Cap Installations in granville OHDefinition of a “chimney leak”

When we refer to a “chimney leak,” we’re talking about water or moisture within any part of the chimney system, regardless of how it got there.

The most common causes of leaky chimneys

Here they are, in no particular order.

Damaged or missing chimney cap or flue cover

If your chimney cap or flue cover is severely damaged, or if you don’t have one of these protective devices, chimney leaks are certain to start. Water and snow can move right in and harm the chimney liner, interior masonry, fireplace damper, the firebox and other parts of the system.

Solve this problem by scheduling repair work or having a full-width chimney cap or flue cover installed.

Masonry leaks

When bricks and mortar begin to take on water, you’ll eventually notice cracking, spalling and crumbling. Masonry leaks can cause widespread water damage, structural compromise and a collapsed chimney.

Solve this problem by having your masonry inspected, followed by brick replacement and tuckpointing. Then have the masonry waterproofed.

Dislodged chimney flashing

Flashing is the material that seals the gap between the chimney and roof. If it has broken from its adhesive, water can spill down into unseen areas of the home, causing problems with the chimney structure as well as walls, ceilings, flooring and other parts of the house. This moisture can also start the growth of mold.

Solve this problem by having new flashing installed and secured correctly.

Cracked or deteriorated chimney crown

A concrete chimney crown is the slab at the top of a chimney that protects the bricks below it and the chimney’s interior spaces. Openings in the crown will allow water to intrude and cause masonry damage and damage in unseen areas within the chimney structure.

Solve this problem by having your crown patched or rebuilt. Follow this work with a water sealant application.

Leaky roof

While a leaky roof isn’t technically a chimney leak, it can negatively affect parts of the chimney structure and mimic some of the signs of a leaky chimney. Water coming in from a damaged roof can deteriorate sections of the masonry and harm other parts of the chimney system.

Solve this problem by having the roof inspected and then repaired.

chimney inspections in Gahanna OHWatch for these signs of a leaky chimney

  • Cracked chimney bricks and crumbling mortar
  • White stains (efflorescence) on the bricks – it means the bricks are absorbing water
  • Musty odors coming from the fireplace
  • Water in the firebox
  • Damp patches on walls or the ceiling near the fireplace or chimney

If you notice any of these signs, the first step is to schedule a chimney inspection to determine the cause of the leak and identify any collateral damage that may have occurred.

Because leaky chimneys are progressive, repair work should start immediately. A chimney leak won’t stop on its own and can spread and affect many parts of the chimney system and the home.
